City signage already has a long history.
In 1782, for example, the city of Vienna first decreed that all houses should be numbered.
However, as the color faded quite quickly, it was decided in 1862 to replace the house numbering system with more durable street signs.
A plan that has remained successful to this day.
Originally, each of Vienna’s then nine districts was given its own color code for quicker identification.
Some of these original signs are still in use and can still be spotted on the odd stroll through the city.
